Nostalgia: Farewell Astroworld

I can't believe Houston, the much-self-vaunted fourth-largest city in the nation, is now without Six Flags Astroworld (sold and disassembled due to rising land values). What is the world coming to, if our greatest popular entertainment venues are now Phobia, paintball and mini-golf? Could we at least please get our own MegaMall?

After 37 years, most Houstonians will miss Astroworld and Waterworld. And you realize now tourists and visitors will call radio stations saying "Houston sure is big! We were driving on 610 for hours and passed three Reliant stadiums before we reached the exit to our hotel!"

It must be a sad day in Houston.
I'm sorry for your loss.
I do remember, however, driving through and going to Astroworld and being disappointed...probably because my trip had taken me from Magic Mountain in LA to Houston via the grand canyon.
I hope you find something else to do for fun.
:-)

Thanks for the empathy, though there are of course worse things that could happen. I'm sure it doesn't compare with L.A., it's just all we had! :-)

Isn't Katy Mills considered a mega mall? I thought Astro World was rinky-dink too compared to other six flags theme parks. But I will miss that fat spider on the rollercoaster every Halloween. Oh well, at least the rodeo will still happen every feb-march right down the street. And in the summer you can always go to Splashtown. Sure it is a longer drive but it is in a nicer neighborhood.

Thanks for your comments. Katy Mills is a large mall, but the MegaMall in Minnesota has an entire theme park inside, and is so big that if you spent just one minute in every store, it would take 8-9 hours to perambulate.
