Musings: Supercilious is right

Only a woman who is all those things would think Superman wasn't good enough for her.

Hm. I find some interesting (even if unintended) insights in this panel.

1) How "supermen" (very successful achievers in their work) are still human and their achievements at work will not compensate for poor human/marital relation skills. I once witnessed a speaker at a legal seminar - inappropriately, but sincerely - go off topic and tell the room of 600 attorneys how important it was that they tend to their wives and value and nourish the relationship (he spoke specifically of wives, not husbands) and not sacrifice them to their career - as he had, causing his third wife to leave him (apparently soon before the seminar).

2) How spouses will see/know these weaknesses, when to all the world, the achiever looks like the perfect man (or woman)that the spouse ought to be thrilled to be married to (this can go either way - highly successful women have an equal opportunity to blow it at home).

3) How a wife (and husband) should be very careful in how she (he) addresses her husband (his wife), since a spouse has the power to deflate, "make weak," even Superman with her (his) hurtful words. No one can do more to lift us up - or drag us down - than a spouse. So one has to choose a spouse carefully - as a spouse can literally make or break your life; use one's closeness/impact on a spouse wisely and thoughtfully for good, not harm; and value and cherish a good spouse as the treasure that he or she is and not let him or her go (either by putting him/her aside after allowing oneself to be seduced by someone that seems more exciting or appealing on the surface or by losing him/her through taking him/her for granted, lack of consideration or thoughfulness, and generally neglecting to "water" the relationship).

All useful insights in real life -- however I was thinking of Chris Reeve's all-American clean-cut Superman and the blonde was not Lois Lane so clearly some other woman cutting his psychological hamstrings because she thought she was too good for him (flying off at the handle for her own reasons or hot buttons -- as any man or woman can do at times).
