I just read a sci-fi story that relates to this. A woman was badly injured and in constant pain. While waiting for her new cloned body, she resorted to a black-market operation to rewire her pain receptors to her pleasure centers in her brain.
Unfortunately, this resulted in her becoming addicted to pain stimuli, causing her to seek out pain-giving activities. When her new body was ready, she wouldn't move into it....
Interesting. I'm always interested in the author and story title, OK?
