Quotes: "Art is never chaste" (Picasso)

"Art is never chaste. It ought to be forbidden to ignorant innocents, never allowed into contact with those not sufficiently prepared. Yes, art is dangerous. Where it is chaste, it is not art." -- Pablo Picasso [quoted in Antonina Vallentin, Pablo Picasso (1957), ch. 11].

Bravo!

(If it does not stir SOMETHING in the viewer, it does not speak. If it does not speak, it is not art.)

Here is a great quote on artists which speaks to where art gets its visceral power.(From "The Moon and Sixpence" by W. Somerset Maugham which is the story of a fictional artist inspired by the real life of Paul Gauguin. This is from the first page where the author explains why he became interested in writing about the fictional artist.)

"The artist, painter, poet, or musician, by his decoration, sublime or beautiful, satisfies the aesthetic sense; but that is akin to the sexual instinct, and shares its barbarity: He lays before you also the greater gift of himself."
