Musings: Personal soundtracks

Forget personal ring tones. What we need is personal soundtracks, personal theme songs that play in the background of our phone calls, lending a musical backdrop and an aural texture to our phone conversations.

I got this idea while listening to Muzak on hold via my cell phone. The music would fuzz and rarify as the signal ebbed and flowed. (I'm in a building with storms in the area.) A personal audio backdrop to our cell phone calls would mean no more wondering about dropped calls and regular questions like "Are you still there?" or "Can you hear me now?"

Just a smattering of Kenny G or a fine patina of Pachelbel. Or your whole MP3 playlist rendered mutedly underneath every phone call. What do you think, ring tone vendors?

Anything but Gasolina, 50 Cent, or the O Song -- please!

The only problem I see is for those who have hearing difficulties. The service should have the option of disable from the receiving end to eliminate the distracting sounds. Perhaps a more workable solution would be a light or some type of signal indicator available should one need to know connection is still established. Perhaps a signal strength indicator of the other person’s area would be indicated on the screen. And if this could be made available then perhaps the person using the service could indicate whether they would want it to be visual or auditory...

I like the personal sountracks idea. Almost all television and movies have sountracks that set the mood and tone. Why not be able to set the mood and tone too? Say a bill collector calls...why not play "Who could that be knocking at my door..." in the background? "A Time For Us" when trying to land a date? "We Are Family" when calling Mom for Mother's Day.... Rather than a whole soundtrack, perhaps short audibles, like those available on IM programs? Point, click...and allow a song to say it for you!
